Arsenal vs Leicester City – Barclays Premier League

Arsenal vs Leicester City

Another week of Barclays Premier League soccer returns after a long summer, where Arsenal hosts Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, 13th August 2022, at 12:30 PM ET.

It is only the second game-day of this season, but Arsenal seems to have gathered a strong momentum from their preseason in America. The same cannot be said for Leicester City as they blew a 2-0 lead against Brentford in their season’s opening game.

Even the transfer business in the summer has been the opposite for these two clubs. Arsenal Football Club was active once the transfer window opened and has made a few notable signings, but Leicester City has not yet signed a new player.

This Saturday’s clash will be a test for both clubs as they look to finish higher than where they ended on the Premier League table last season.

Premier League Opener

Arsenal

Arsenal traveled to Selhurst Park for their first game of the season against Crystal Palace. The meeting between these two London clubs started with Arsenal dominating the first 20-25 minutes in the first half.

Arsenal scored their first goal from a corner taken from Martin Odegaard. The ball found the new signing, Zinchenko, on the far post, who squared it back to the penalty box. The ball fell kindly to Gabriel Martinelli, and he headed it inside the goal.

The final 20 minutes of the second half was all Crystal Palace, as they tried to look for an equalizer before the half-time whistle. However, they couldn’t break Arsenal’s low block, with all the opposing players defending the ball in their half.

The second half also started the way it ended, with Crystal Palace coming out with all guns blazing. However, just when it looked like Patrick Vieira’s men were about to get a goal back, the Gunners scored a second goal, courtesy of Marc Guehi.

It looked like Bukayo Saka had scored the second goal in the 85th minute before stoppage time, but on closer inspection, his shot deflected off Guehi’s head, rendering it an OG (Own Goal). Arsenal won the game 2-0 and walked away with the three points.

Leicester City

Leicester City looked in great form in the first half against Brentford, dominating possession and having shots on goal. However, their first game proved why they need to make more movements in the transfer market before it closes.

Leicester has had many criticisms the whole summer because of the lack of movements in the transfer window. They finished 8th last season but could have been higher if it weren’t for their shambolic defending during set-pieces.

Leicester scored the first goal in the 33rd minute through a towering header from Timothy Castagne. Both teams created chances to score more goals in the first half, but it ended at 1-0 at the whistle.

The start of the second half caught Brentford by surprise as Leicester doubled their lead through a long-range effort from the young Drewsbury-Hall. His left-footed attempt beat the keeper and slotted in the corner of the goal’s right-hand side.

Brentford did not give up hope and kept pushing till they scored a superb team goal in the 62nd minute through their talisman, Ivan Toney. Toney’s goal again exposed Leicester’s fragile defense, letting in too many goals the previous season.

It looked like the game would end in favor of Leicester as it had already crossed the 80-minute mark. However, Josh Dasilva had other plans as he cut inside on his left foot and scored a beautiful curler in the 86th minute.

Both teams shared the spoils and went home with a point each.

Players To Look Out For

Gabriel Jesus joined Arsenal from last season’s PL champions, Manchester City, and he has been in red-hot form since. Arsenal was crying out for an out-and-out striker after the departure of Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, so Arsenal brought in Jesus as their replacement.

He hit the ground running in Arsenal’s tour of America, where he scored a hat-trick against Chelsea. So, he is definitely a player to look out for in Saturday’s game.

The other player for Arsenal is Zinchenko, who also joined from Manchester City. He is a left-back who can also operate as a central midfielder. His surging runs with the ball in City’s last game of the previous season broke the deadlock and went on to win the Premiership.

He brings quality as he has an eye for a great pass and leadership to the team. It was him that assisted Martinelli in their game against Crystal Palace for the first goal. So, Leicester would be wise in keeping a check on him.

Leicester City’s player to watch out for would definitely be their shining star, James Maddison. Though Leicester had a below-par season last year, Maddison dragged the team for most parts. He was their highest goal scorer and assist-maker.

You can also never count out Jamie Vardy, the heart of Leicester’s team. On his day, he can be compared with the best European strikers. If he is fit and starts in the game against Arsenal, Saliba will have a tough time keeping a check on his electric runs.

Arsenal vs. Leicester Preview

The game between Arsenal and Leicester on Saturday will be vital in determining the direction both clubs are on for this season. Leicester can hurt any team on their day, and Arsenal should be wary.

If Arsenal cannot justify the hype surrounding them, this game might prove to be the start of a rocky season ahead. Most soccer fans back Arsenal to win this game with the firepower they’ve got up front.

However the game ends, it will be a treat for all soccer fans worldwide.
