Newcastle United Vs Manchester City – English Premier League

The defending champions, Manchester City, travel to St. James’ Park to face a reinvigorated Newcastle at 11:30 AM ET on Sunday, August 21st, 2022. This fixture would have been insignificant if not for the common factor that connects these two clubs – Arab oil money.

Newcastle Vs. Manchester City

Soccer fans around the globe have humorously named this clash the “Oil Classico”, pointing to the millions of cash their owners poured into these two clubs. Both these clubs have Saudi-backed owners, with some claiming that these owners use the influence of their governments and wealth to get their way with the English Football Association.

Whatever the reasons, this fixture has suddenly become a matter of significance for those in the Northeast and the blue side of Manchester.

Manchester City

Manchester City has cemented themselves as the top club in England, along with Liverpool, in the last 5 to 10 years. They were a mid-table club until the Saudis arrived with their oil money, and it hasn’t been the same since.

Sheikh Mansour, City’s owner, has injected over 1 billion pounds into the club’s transfer activities, attracting the best players from all over Europe, South America, and Africa. The first thing the owners did when they bought Manchester City was to improve their training ground into state-of-the-art facilities.

Then they used all their influence and wealth to commercialize the club and make City a global phenomenon. City also built the Etihad Stadium, one of the best modern stadiums in world football.

Manchester City won their first Premier League title in the 12/13 season under Roberto Mancini, with a last-minute goal by Kun Aguero. That goal has become iconic in the folklore of the Premier League’s greatest-ever moments.

It has since been more than a decade, and they have won 6 Premier League titles, with a number of FA Cups, League Cups, and Community shields.

Fast forward to the present day, Manchester City ran riot at the Etihad against Bournemouth, ending with a 4-0 scoreline. Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring with an intricate play between him and their stellar signing of the season, Erling Haaland.

However, the star of this game was City’s Kevin Debruyne. He scored the second goal in the 31st minute with a beautiful curler from the outside of his right boot. He dribbled past a couple of players, sending all the defenders the other way.

City’s local boy, Phil Foden, chipped in with the third goal before the end of the first half. The game ended with a fourth goal coming from Bournemouth’s Lerma in his own net.

Newcastle United

Newcastle United is one of the two teams from Northeast England. It is a historic club in England, with the most iconic player being Alan Shearer. He ran riot in the Premier League for Newcastle from 1996 till 2006.

Shearer is the highest goal-scorer in the history of the Premier League. However, their status as an iconic soccer club went spiraling down due to years of mismanagement from the owner and the board.

Newcastle even got relegated to the Championship for one season, proving the club’s level.

With the arrival of Saudi owners by the end of 2021, the club miraculously escaped relegation for the second time in a decade. The Saudi Arabia state-run Public Investment Fund, said to be worth around 220 billion Euros, came in and splashed the cash in the January transfer window to save the team from relegation.

The signing that reinvigorated the Toons was Bruno Guimaraes, who came to the club from Lyon for a whopping 43.4 million dollars. He inspired the team to a run of wins in the second half of the season, saving them from relegation.

Newcastle has brought last season’s momentum into the new season, beating newly-promoted Nottingham Forest in their first game of the season. Fabian Schar scored the best goal of the opening week with a rocket from outside the box at the start of the second half.

Callum Wilson sealed the win for the Toons with a goal in the 78th minute. For their second game, Newcastle faced Brighton, who had defeated Manchester United with 4 goals the previous week. The game resulted in a draw between the two teams.

Newcastle United Vs Manchester City – Preview

It would be naïve to think that Manchester City will lose this game against Newcastle United, but history has shown that we can never write a team off in the Premier League.

Manchester City is a slick passing team that likes to keep possession of the ball. Their football philosophy stems directly from Pep Guardiola’s style of play, keeping possession and dictating the game’s pace.

However, Newcastle is a physical team that can hit anyone on the break with their mercurial forwards. It only takes a couple of seconds to transition from defense to attack for Eddie Howe’s team.

The players to watch out for in the Manchester City team are Kevin Debruyne and Erling Haaland, their star signing from Dortmund. He will test Newcastle’s backline with his explosive runs, lightning speed, and physicality.

For Newcastle, their front four are the players to watch out for – Saint-Maximin, Almiron, Callum Wilson, and Guimaraes. When they link up, they can compete with the best teams in the country. It is without a doubt that they are the best players for Newcastle United currently.

No matter who wins the game on Sunday, we are bound to see a tough battle between the two Arab-backed clubs. Both owners will be looking forward to getting one over the other.
