Sandhagen Vs. Yadong: The Sandman Cuts Yadong Wide Open

The arena was wild and packed with blood this Saturday night as UFC Las Vegas 60’s main event kicked off with a bang. Cory Sandhagen went up against the Kung Fu Kid, Song Yadong, in four grueling rounds of classic UFC combat.

Although it looked like it could be anyone’s fight, with Yadong slightly doing better in the ring, a nasty cut above his eye brought things to an end in the fourth round. The doctor on standby carefully looked at the injury and declared the contest unsafe to continue. The bells rang, and the announcement was made, declaring Cory Sandhagen as the winner by technical knockout.

Cory Sandhagen, A.K.A: The Sandman

Things hadn’t been looking so well for Cory Sanghagen leading up to the recent contest. The 30-year-old UFC fighter was coming from two back-to-back losses when he was matched up against Yadong. Many predicted this to be another loss for Sandhagen; experts were sure his opponent, Yadong, would make things extremely difficult for him. However, the Sandman proved that he is still a force to be reckoned with as he went toe to toe against the Kung Fu Kid and came out on top.

Sandhagen started 2021 with a fight against T.J Dillashaw, a match that had to be rescheduled due to its cancellation. It was later organized to take place on July 25th. The match was highly competitive, and Sandhagen had some great moments; however, he couldn’t lead on the scorecard and ultimately lost the bout. His next match against Petr Yan didn’t go as planned either, as it was another loss for the 30-year-old bantamweight fighter.

Disappointed by the outcome of both matches, Sandhagen took some time off to work on the areas where he needed major improvements. Everyone knew that the Sandman was a ferocious striker, but he wasn’t really at his best when it came to grappling.

The Sandman

The Sandman recognized his drawbacks and immediately set to work fixing them, becoming a stronger, sharper, and more technical contender. Fans saw a much more calculative fighter during the bout against Yadong, a move that ultimately secured an advantage during the fight.

Song Yadong, A.K.A: The Kung Fu Kid

Everyone loves an underdog story, and it’s no different when it comes to the Kung Fu Kid. Song Yadong has been a rising star for the past few years, with a list of impressive wins on his record. The 24-year-old fighter is considered # 10 in the entire bantamweight division and has powerful hands that have taken down stronger opponents in the past.

Yadong is an impeccable striker known for throwing accurate and strong punches that do a lot of damage. The way he knocked out his previous opponent Marlon Moraes, is proof of his skill and tenacity in the ring. Both fighters held their ground, exchanging blows and kicks in the first round. However, Yadong soon finished the match with lightning punches, knocking his opponent out with a well-timed, three-punch combination.

The results were clear as Moraes hit the ground. The bells rang, and the announcement was made; the Kung Fu Kid had done it again. Yadong’s win against Moraes will surely go down as one of the cleanest KOs in UFC bantamweight history.
The Kung Fu Kid Fans were hoping to see a repeat of his last match when he went up against the Sandman, Sandhagen. However, Cory Sandhagen had come well prepared for the bout and had some surprises up his sleeve, or rather, his elbows. This unexpected elbow counter by Sandhagen would end up giving Yadong a massive injury, ultimately costing him the match.

Round 1 saw a surprising start as Sandhagen came at Yadong with a grapple, pushing the Kung Fu Kid toward the fence. A rogue knee from Yadong hit the Sandman too low and prompted a warning from the referee. The fighters were interlocked for a while but soon broke free, allowing Yadong to hit his opponent clean in the face. What a way to start things off.

More grappling and some clinches later, the two fighters were back on their feet, rapidly exchanging blows. It became clear that Yadong was the better striker, pummeling Sandhagen with three-punch combos and more. The Sandman responded with a well-timed leg kick toward the end of the round.

Yadong continued to outdo his Sandhagen in round 2, hitting him with a powerful punch that sent Sandhagen toward the fence. The Sandman tried to land a knee to the face but missed multiple times. However, he did get a lucky elbow in, cutting Yadong above the eye. This would be the match’s turning point, as the injury soon became quite serious, hampering Yadong’s ability to outperform his opponent.

The match takes a bloody turn

The consequences of Yadong’s injury became clear in rounds 3 and 4 when the Kung Fu Kid appeared visibly slower. Sandhagen took full advantage of this and began targeting the wound to hurt his opponent. Yadong brushed it away with a couple of smiles and tongues, but it was clear that the gnash was costing him a lot.

The doctor looked closely at Yadong’s injury at the end of the fourth round and realized it had significantly worsened. The wound was deep and excruciating; it looked like a big chunk of his skin had come off. Not wanting to risk something fatal, the doctor declared the wound too dangerous, and the match soon halted. Sandhagen won the bout on a technicality; the final score, 39-37, favored Sandhagen.

What Would Have Happened If Yadong Didn’t Get Injured?

The action-packed UFC match poses one of the biggest questions in sports streaming history; would Yadong have won if he hadn’t gotten injured? Fans seem to believe so.

Brutal cut above Song Yadong's eye.

Everything was working out well for Yadong before the sudden injury, which leads many to believe the Kung Fu Kid would’ve prevailed otherwise. He held up his own against the Sandman and dished out some powerful blows that almost sealed the deal. However, as soon as he got cut, it looked like he was fighting at 50% capacity at best.
