Round 16 starts tomorrow, with the USA facing the Netherlands, marking the beginning of the quarter-final qualifiers. With Argentina’s match against Australia following soon after, Messi fans are hyped yet again. Will Argentina power through? Or will the Aussie soccer team pull a shocker on us all?

Quick Recap: What’s Been Happening In The World Cup?

It has been a hectic fight for Round 16 qualifications, and we’ve seen many knockouts this past week. One of the biggest shockers is that Germany has been eliminated from the competition.

We saw a string of matches where Spain tied 1:1 with Germany, Cameroon tied 3:3 with Serbia, Brazil beat Switzerland 1:0, and Ghana beat South Korea 3:2.

In other matches, Portugal beat Uruguay 2:0, Senegal beat Ecuador 2:1, Netherlands beat Qatar 2:0, and the USA beat Iran 1:0. This was America’s first win in the 2022 World Cup, a commendable feat.

Meanwhile, England dominated Wales 3:0, and Australia beat Denmark 1:0. Tunisia beat defending champions France in a surprising turn of events. Germany beat Costa Rica at 4:2, while Saudi Arabia managed to win against Mexico, scoring 2:1.

Japan delivers another shocker to the world by defeating Spain 2:1. The world is reeling in this notorious ‘upset,’ but we think it’s a triumph worth celebrating. This makes it the second time the land of the rising sun has brought down a European giant, having done the same to Germany not so long ago.

Japan’s only defeat in this World Cup has been against Croatia, who won the match by 1 goal. With that, Japan promptly moves forward for round 16. They will be facing Croatia in their next bout.

How Is Argentina Doing So Far?

Argentina had a rough start against Saudi Arabia, who beat them 2:1 in a shocking turn of events. Messi fans were disappointed and got the internet raving about the team’s poor performance. But thankfully, the team has been doing better since then.

The Argentina football team redeemed themselves in their second world cup match when they faced off against Mexico. Messi was the first to score in the 64th minute, igniting a roar from relieved fans. Many of them had begun to doubt Argentina’s chances, but the tides seemed to shift now in their favor.

Enzo Fernandez celebrates his goal

Enzo Fernandez, the 21-year-old Argentine midfielder, sealed the deal with another powerful goal in the 87th minute. The match was a clear victory for the Argentines, who got back the dignity they had lost after their previous defeat.

Argentina Vs. Poland: Match Review

After beating Mexico, Messi’s team faced off against Poland, a strong European contender in the World Cup. They won the match 2:0, proving to the world that they are back in business. But the interesting thing is Messi actually messed up big time during the first half, costing Argentina a lead goal.

First Half

It was clear from the beginning that the Poles had trouble keeping up with their South American opponents. Argentine players were faster and had better control of the ball. What started as a rough patch for the team was now starting to look like an easy path to Round 16 qualification.

Messi, in particular, played quite aggressively, either making goal attempts on his own or pitching daring passes to teammates that often didn’t connect.

Despite the constant Argentine assaults, the Poles managed to stay intact and put up a decent defense. However, Polish hearts started beating rapidly after a penalty kick was declared in favor of Argentina. The shooter? None other than the Atomic Flea himself, Lionel Messi.

But when the moment actually came, things didn’t go as Messi had planned. The 35-year-old football legend could not get the ball past Wojciech Szczesny, who made a brilliant save. Szczesny seemed to guess exactly where Messi would shoot and, in later interviews, insisted that he knew all along.

Second Half

After a goalless first half, Argentina knew they had to amp things up in the second. Perhaps that was the driving factor behind Alexis Mac Allister’s powerful first goal, literally seconds into the 2nd half.

Alexis Mac Allister

The Argentine right-wing lunged forward in a coordinated attack, moving dangerously close to the Polish net. Allister, the 23-year-old midfielder, was at the right spot at the right moment. He caught up to the ball when it was right in front of the net and took his shot. The crowd roared as the ball slipped past Szczesny’s fingers and touched the net.

Then, Julian Alvarez confirmed the win in the 67th minute when he scored Argentina’s second goal for the match. By this point, it was safe to say that Argentina had won their second match in the World Cup.

Argentina Vs. Australia: Who Will Win?

Australia lost their initial match against France at 4:1, quite an upset for the team. However, they have gone on to win twice since then, beating Tunisia and Denmark 1:0.

While the Australian team is talented, it doesn’t seem like they can hold their own against any of the bigger World Cup contenders. Their 4:1 defeat in the hands of France proves this fact.

It is clear to us that football fans favor Argentina for the win in the next match. And frankly, who wouldn’t? The Aussies have never made a significant impact during any World Cup, and it certainly doesn’t seem like they’re about to start now.
